Earthquake rattles buildings in northern India

PUNJAB: The tremors were felt in the Indian capital and much of northern India like Srinagar, Shimla and Chandigarh, after an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude around Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh border on Wednesdays. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

"The quake occurred at 24:27 and measured 5.8 on the Richter scale.'s Epicenter was somewhere in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh border," said R Dattatreya, director of the Department of Seismology, India Meteorological Department , in New Delhi.

The tremors were felt in most parts of Haryana and Punjab, lasted six or seven seconds. This caused panic in some places, especially in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

There were reports of tremors in Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ambala and elsewhere.
