Ludhiana: The city police seized Rs 75 lakh from an NRI couple on Monday and arrested the accused, as they were not able to provide details on cash. According to SHO Dugri Satvinder Singh Virk, the police acted on secret information about hawala money being transported in a car. The vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint on the road that divides urban enclave estate Dugri and flower.
The police said the couple was traveling in a MUV. They claimed to have sold the property and that the money was part of the deal. However, NRIs identified as Iqbal Singh and Baldev Kaur of England could not produce adequate information about the origin of money. They own a house in Basant Avenue. The couple was interrogated for two or three hours.
