HISAR
/ BATHINDA: Six people, including two women, were killed when an
overloaded jeep they were traveling in collided head on with a truck
near Muklan village, about 19 kms from the city on the Hisar-Rajgarh
road Tuesday night .
The dead were two women and four men, while 14 others, including children, were seriously injured and were taken to a private hospital in Hisar. The jeep was overloaded and had about 22 people, and was on the way to Mandi Hisar Siwani. The accident occurred on a blind curve in the road known as "Deva path 'around 16:00. While five died on the spot, one died in Hisar civil hospital.
Residents of the nearby village rushed to the scene and took the injured and the bodies of the victims of the mangled remains of the vehicle, before the police could get there. Sources said the driver of the jeep had tried to overtake a vehicle and was not able to detect speeding truck coming in the opposite direction and collided head on with the truck. The truck driver fled the scene leaving his vehicle behind.
In another accident, a pall of darkness descended upon Rampura and Bathinda cities of Punjab on Tuesday as news of the deaths of five family members Sachdeva, Sachdeva Sweets owners, in a car accident in Canada came here. Among the dead were three women and two children. Jolly Sachdeva's family had made their way into Surrey city in Canada through its now famous "Sachdeva Sweets."
Jolly was not in the car at the time of the accident, but her mother Vidyawati, sister Neelam, wife Reena, son Anish (5) and his daughter Jessica (3) died in the crash.
The Sachdevas run a candy store in Rampura and were a household name in the city. The family had emigrated to Canada about 15 years ago and created the brand "Sachdeva Sweets" in Surrey. Sachdeva Judgepal Uncle Jolly, who lives in Rampura, said the family was well known in Rampura and had won a similar status in Canada.
