CHANDIGARH: Haryana farmers do not receive even the cost of inputs for the cultivation of wheat as minimum support price central government (MSP) of Rs 1,350 per quintal is Rs 263 less than R 1613 cost state department of agriculture itself has been calculated as the sum of farmer spends to produce a bushel of grain.
In response to an RTI query, the Agriculture Department said Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Kumar that the department had estimated the cost of production taking into account various factors, such as human labor, harvesting, threshing and the use of fertilizers.
According to sources, the state government had recommended MSP of wheat at the rate of Rs 1,650 per quintal, but the central government declined by Rs 300 per quintal. "Due to the low price of wheat, farmers in neighboring areas of Haryana have started selling their grain in neighboring Rajasthan, where the state government has given a bonus of Rs 150 per quintal in addition to MSP," said Gurnam Singh Charuni , state president of the BKU.
Gurnam Singh Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the government should announce a bonus of Rs 300 per quintal as the government of Chhattisgarh, offering R 270 as a bonus. "Insist on our demand, we will hold a mahapanchayat in Gohana-Rohtak road in Rukhi village in Sonipat on May 8. Unless the government announced bonus by then, it may block the way," he added Charuni. According to official figures, more than 51.36 lakh tonnes of wheat has arrived in mandis of Haryana during the current shopping season. Beyond that, more than 51.30 lakh tonnes has been procured by government agencies at the minimum support price and 5,631 tonnes has been purchased by private millers and traders.
