Help your dog cool this summer

Ludhiana: If you have a pet, summer is when you need to give love and affection, to help cope with the scorching heat. This is when your pet is bound to feel the greatest stress. TOI gives tips for veterinarians in the city to keep your dog in good health and spirits.

Dr. Ajay Mangat, a veterinarian, said pet owners should consult doctors for advice on how to keep ticks and flies at bay in March. Ticks and flies cause potentially fatal infections in domestic animals, he warned, saying that people should spray anti-ticks on pets right at the beginning of summer. Dr Mangat warned people against E. Protozone beds, which causes severe skin diseases in domestic animals. "Like dengue decreased platelet count in humans, the infection does the same for pets," he said. The protozone not forgive humans either. If infected, leading to zoonotic diseases such as inflammation of the joints.

April, May and June are the months of dry heat, therefore dogs find relief from the coolers. However, July, August and September are difficult. Dogs maintain body temperature by panting. By panting, evaporation takes place, which cools the body. But in July, August and September, the humidity is very high and little evaporation takes place. This results in heat stroke which can be fatal for pets. Therefore, the air conditioners are a must for pets in these three months. Several cases of pet deaths occur in the summer season, but if a dog does through these months without any problem, which is likely to remain healthy all year.

In humid climates, make sure your dog does not get wet, because moisture encourages the growth of bacteria and fungi. If AC can not be provided, installed water coolers and use them without a place
