Anger on streets for Sarabjit Singh

LUDHIANA: Protests over death of Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan left the city fuming on Friday as people came out on streets, burning flags of Pakistan and effigies of Indian and Pak governments.

"There is nothing more precious to a mother than her child on this earth and these people are compensating it with one or two crore rupees. I am shamed of what our politicians have been doing," said Chandra Kant Chadda, president of Action Against Corruption. People from all communities came forward to ask for justice for his family. Blaming the rude behaviour of Indian government towards an innocent being, people asked the government to take action as soon as possible, threatening that the 3-day mourning may turn to a revolution in Punjab as well as in the country. "It's not time to react like cowards and maintain relationships with Pakistan. The most important thing is to punish people who have killed an innocent person without any fault," said Harjit Singh, member, Anti Crime Association.

"It was the Indian government's responsibility to step forward and ask for Sarabjit's freedom. But as usual, they are busy in developing political relationships. They are backstabbing our country again and again but our government is handicapped as usual," said the Shahi Imam of Punjab, Habib-ur-Rehman Sani Ludhianavi, People even asked for breaking all trade ties with Pakistan, admitting that it would also hit traders in India but maintained that such stern action was required. "We will not stop protests until we are given justice. They beheaded our soldiers and our government sat silently and now again we have not taken any harsh step against Pakistan," said Kamaljot Singh from Field Ganj.

Social networking sites too were abuzz with discussion on Sarabjit. Criticising the politicians, Raghav Chopra, a businessman from Model Town, wrote, "When Sarabjit was alive all our politician's were dead but as soon as he died all are out from their graveyard to show their crocodile tears."
