PUNJAB SITUATION IN JAIL Faridkot "UNDER CONTROL"


Faridkot April 23:
A day after violence broke out on the death of an undertrial in the district jail here, Faridkot Jail Superintendent JP Singh said on Tuesday that the situation is fully under control now.
Seven staff district jail were wounded, two of them seriously, when a rebel group of prisoners yesterday resorted to throwing stones and bricks protesting the death of an undertrial in suspicious circumstances yesterday.
Sessions and District Judge Archan visited Puri jail for carrying out a judicial inquiry into the incident as Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today ordered a judicial inquiry, said Singh. He said the prison canteen suffered heavy losses, as it was burned by violent inmates.
Harsha Singh (65), who is facing trial under the NDPS Act and had been transferred from the prison in Muktsar Faridkot jail a few days ago, died last morning, prompting violent protests in the prisons. Three undertrials lodged in jail here have died due to various reasons in the past one week. The exact cause of the death of Harsha be established after receiving mortem report, said JP Singh. A case has been registered against six prisoners from the prison that the problems started.
