Recognizing the need to allow the free play of market forces in trade between India and Pakistan through the Attari border, Punjab revenue and public relations minister Bikram Singh Majithia traders claimed that "illegitimate union monopoly truck put to an end. "
However, the minister also made it clear that no injustice would be done to truck owners whose vehicles were often misused by traders and loaded with more than the allowable load. Majithia made the remarks during a meeting with traders in Punjab, Delhi and other parts of the country. These operators, involved in the import and export from and to Pakistan through Attari road and rail routes, met with the minister to solve their problems with the truckers and unions operating in the integrated checkpoint (ICP).
Majithia was led by Prime Minister Parkash Singh Badal and MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal look at the problems of the traders after the two met recently to make a protest by the "patronage" extended to unions of Punjab politicians trucks. With the consent of the merchants, joint working committee comprising officials of the district administration, the police, customs and traders has been established to develop a strategy to minimize IndoPak trade problems.
