1984 anti-Sikh riots: Jagdish Tytler claims "telling lies" witnesses

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, against whom the court has ordered the reopening of a case of alleged involvement in 1984 anti-Sikh riots, attacked the witnesses saying they were not reliable and "telling lies".

To say that one witness Surinder Singh has changed his statements on five occasions, he wondered why the SA lead counsel Phoolka "forced him" to write a statement.

"My name is again on the basis of the statement of Surinder Singh and Jasbir Singh. Surinder Singh first gave a statement in English and then gave a written statement in Gurmukhi. Want to know that Surinder Singh Phoolka forced to write a statement "Tytler said.

He also said he was not present at the scene of the crime and that he was "100 percent" to get an investigation into the killing.

"I have produced a Doordarshan footage that shows who was in the body of Mrs. Gandhi 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 ... how I can be in two place at the same time," he told television channels.

Tytler said the second witness in the case Jasbir Singh was declared a fugitive by a court. He said research organizations found that Jasbir Singh was in Jodhpur at the time of the incident. "All these witnesses are not only unreliable, but they are telling lies," said Congress leader.

Tytler questioned why the BJP did not take any action in the matter when it came to power.

"The BJP government came twice, they too could have taken action against me," Tytler said, adding that he was "100 percent open for research in the 1984 riots case."

He said he was given a clean chit when LK Advani was the interior minister in the NDA government.

The case of 29-year-old in connection with the riots against Sikhs broke out following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi turned against Tytler with a Delhi court on Wednesday the cancellation closure report giving clean chit to CBI and ask him to reopen the investigation into the killing of three people.
