With the opposition Congress demanding postponement of block samiti and zila parishad polls, the SAD-BJP government asked the Election Commission to postpone the elections for over a week.
"We are keen to have fair elections.'s Prime minister believes that if the opposition wants more time, there should be no problem to postpone polls. Punjab Congress leader Partap Bajwa appealed yesterday to the State Election Commission for more time . Today, we have also resorted to poll panel to postpone the elections for over a week, "said Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra.
When contacted, State Election Commissioner SS Brar said he has received a request from the government and the final decision will be taken on Thursday. "I'll have a meeting with the ADC (Development) to take a final decision on the issue," said Brar. On Tuesday, Congress had asked Brar alleging various anomalies - from the issuance of the notice on the evening of Thursday evening, in the reserve lists of electoral processes and incomplete. If so, then the people will have to be removed from the current block samiti and added another village, since there must be a minimum of 15 and maximum of 25 people in a block samiti. Once confirmed, we will rearrange the list of villages in the block samiti accordingly, "said Ranbir Singh DDPO.
Meanwhile, Congress spokesman Sukhpal Khaira on Wednesday said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has ordered at least three villages - Nadala in the district of Kapurthala, Bhai Rupa Guruharsahai in Bathinda and Ferozepur district - be treated as panchayat nagar for elections at a meeting Tuesday. "If these people are made nagar panchayat will have to be removed from the list of villages and the toaster reservation will need to be redone. Nadala If there are three notifications.
