Amritsar, February 20

As anticipated, the first-time voters in the city made their presence felt by coming out with full enthusiasm to exercise their right to franchise. Most enthusiastic of the voters reached the spot early in the morning. While most of them got inked, each had their own reasons and opinions, but the common sentiment was to vote for a change.

Jasleen Kaur (19), who exercised her right for the first time, said, "I voted for a change, for a leader with a clean image. Today there is a need to create job opportunities for the youth in Punjab and I expect that our chosen leaders would make sure that the educated, skilled youth do not have to migrate due to lack of jobs." She was accompanied by her friends, who exercised their right to vote for the first time.

"Most leaders do not fulfil their election promises once they get elected. But I believe that as a young voter, I definitely voted for someone, who would change the traditional way that political system works in our country," said Deepali, 19, a first-time voter from Amritsar North.

While most of the first-timers were given a merit batch or a certificate for exercising their voting right, it was the feeling of being a part of the democratic process that excited them. "I feel good that I could do my bit and take part in the democratic process. I have been keenly participating in political happenings for the past few days as I wanted to make an informed choice," said Lovepreet Singh, a first-time voter from Amritsar West.

Mehakpreet Kaur Saini, 21, another first-time voter, from Amritsar North, came from Australia to cast her vote. "I am a student there and I wanted to schedule my visit to Punjab so that I could participate in the assembly poll. I voted for a progressive, public welfare-driven leader, who could ensure that Punjabi youth get good entrepreneurial opportunities."

...vote for change, jobs

Tarn Taran: First-timer voters turned up at polling booths with great enthusiasm and high hopes in Tarn Taran. Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Khara village, after casting his vote said he wants the government to give them a drug-free society and jobs for youths. Gursewak Singh of the same village said he was in favour of a government under whose rule there are no sacrilege incidents. He still seemed haunted over the recent incidents. Deepali, a resident of Tarn Taran town and a law student, was glad to register as a first-time voter. She said she preferred a government that makes the country economically strong. Deepali had come with her mother to cast her vote at local Government Elementary School, Char Khamba, Tarn Taran. She demanded 50 per cent reservation for women folk. Gurbaxpuri
