Foreign security for more prisons


Ludhiana: As the Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh is fighting for life after being attacked by Pakistani prisoners in Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore in Pakistan, senior officials of the department of prisons say they have alerted the jail superintendents several prisons, including Ludhiana, in the state to increase the security of foreign prisoners housed in them.


Jagjit Singh, IG Prisons, Punjab, said: "After the incident in Pakistan, we've alerted the superintendents of prisons in Punjab, including Ludhiana, take special care of foreign inmates. These foreign prisoners and are being housed in barracks separated in prisons ".


In Ludhiana, the women's prison and jail inmates are correctional foreigners, while the central prison has no such prisoners. In the women's prison, two prisoners of Gujranwala Pakistani women, who have been convicted under the NDPS Act seven years ago, while correctional jail has a Canadian prisoner.


Snehjyot Dhawan, superintendent of the women's prison, said: "We have taken precautions to ensure that these prisoners are always safe. Vigil of the night in the barracks which house foreign prisoners is increasing. Moreover, special care is taken of these prisoners. Yet both Pakistani religious are safe and have never faced any problem in prison. "
